Jackson County Schools New K-8 School
Marianna, Florida

This new school will replace 3 older schools, serving 2,300 students in grades K through 8. Because of the divergent needs of the elementary and middle school students, the campus was carefully planned to provide an educational community where the students share certain amenities like the main entry, administration, dining, and the media center while retaining individual identities in separate wings for the two age groups. A central courtyard will provide opportunities for outdoor classes and dining, with an amphitheater outside the media center.
Special attention was paid to maximizing natural light throughout the buildings. Academic wings are oriented from east to west to bring light into the classrooms and corridors. Where each corridor intersects another there is a cupola with clerestory windows to bring in daylight, and dining facilities, the media center, and teacher’s lounges were planned with outside views and maximum daylighting. Site circulation and bus and parent drop-off areas were developed with safety and security considerations as critical parameters.
